How the scam is carried out
Victims would receive text messages that were purportedly from LTA notifying them of unpaid bills or fines. They would then click on a link embedded in the messages to view information regarding the supposed fines, but would instead be directed to fraudulent websites. After they provide their credit or debit card details and one-time passwords (OTPs), they would subsequently discover unauthorised transactions made with their cards.
What to do to prevent being a scam victim
1. Do not click on URL links provided in these text messages
2. Always verify the authenticity of the information with the official sources or website
3. Never disclose your personal or Internet banking details and OTP to anyone
4. Report any fraudulent credit/debit card charges to your bank and cancel your card immediately
Please call ‘999’ if you require urgent Police assistance.
Please be alert that LTA does not notify road users of unpaid bills or fines via text messages or request for payments for offence notices, vehicle registration, and licensing matters via URL links embedded in text messages.
