Prastiya Mulya University (Prasmul) School of Applied STEM through the Business Mathematics study program held discussions with practitioners from the insurance industry in collaboration with The General Insurance Association of Indonesia (AAUI) and PT Asuransi Tokio Marine Indonesia.
Stevanus Wisnu Wijaya, Dean of Prasmul's School of Applied STEM hopes that the actuarial study field, which is one of the highlights of the Prasmul Mathematics Study Program, can continue to strengthen student competency through meetings with industry.
"This collaborative activity with credible institutions and industries (hopefully) will further enable Prasetiya Mulya to be able to contribute to the world of the insurance industry," hoped Wisnu in his opening remarks at the guest lecture held at the Prasmul BSD Campus, South Tangerang (21/3/2022).
On the same occasion, Bern Dwyanto (Executive Director of AAUI) said that Indonesia still needs a lot of actuary professions in the future.
The event of industrial practitioner guest lecturers begins with several highlights from partner representatives, namely; Bern Dwyanto (Executive Director of AAUI), Harris Marpaung (Head of the AAUI Literacy Department), Setiarsa Heru Wibowo (PT Asuransi Tokio Marine Indonesia).
Setiarsa Heru, who is also a Prasmul alumnus, said that this knowledge-sharing activity on financial literacy and inclusion is expected to accelerate the acceleration of Indonesia's financial literacy and inclusion which continues to improve.
"This is the responsibility of all of us so that people who have used financial services or products have sufficient financial literacy in this regard. At the same time exploring what professions are in the insurance industry," said Heru.
"And most importantly how students can learn digital strategies that can be applied in the insurance business and in direct contact with customers," he added.
The event of a Prasmul industry practitioner guest lecturer guided by Maria Zefanya, Head of the Business Mathematics Study Program presented several discussion materials, including:
"About AAUI & Insurance for Millennials" by Harris Marpaung (Head of AAUI Literacy Department)
"Insurance Literacy" by Ahmad Khomaini (Head of Affinity and Financial Institution Department of PT Asuransi Tokio Marine Indonesia) and A Minta Ginting (Head of Claims Department)
"Success Story of Millennial Manager" by Martha Sasongko (Head of Actuary Department by PT Asuransi Tokio Marine Indonesia) and Ahmad Khomaini (Head of Affinity and Financial Institution Department)
In his presentation, Harris Marpaung revealed, Gen Y and Gen X are important factors to be reckoned with in the Indonesian economy.
"One in three Indonesians is a millennial, and 30.7 percent of this generation go to the mall at least once every two weeks. One in three Indonesian millennials definitely goes on vacation at least once a year," he explained.
On the other hand, this generation is also a digital native generation that is very close to the digital lifestyle, including in financial transactions.
"As many as 59 percent of the millennial generation, especially the upper middle class, now prefer non-cash transactions," said Harris. Therefore, he emphasized the importance of digital financial literacy.
Regarding job opportunities, Harris explained, the insurance industry offers various important professions for graduates, including accountants, actuaries, marketing, legal, to underwriting, and claims.
One of Prasmul's 2022 School of Applied STEM alumni, Edbert, revealed that the activities of guest lecturers from industry practitioners provide great benefits for students in capturing a more complete portrait of the world of work.
The alumni who currently serves as an actuarial consultant at Ernst and Young (EY) said that apart from guest lectures, the internship program helped him enter the world of work so that by the time he finished his thesis he would already have a job.
"Seminars like this are able to provide an overview of the world of work in the insurance sector. So I think it's very important," he added.
On the same occasion, Faizah Sari, Prasmul's Head of Co-Operative Education and External Relations explained that guest lecturer activities from industry practitioners like this are one strategy to bring the world of higher education and the world of work closer together.
"This program is for actuarial literacy and actuary career prospects. Apart from the guest lecture program, there are also similar programs in the form of internships for students and industry relations," explained Sari.
"This is a form of Prasmul's real commitment to bringing the world of education and the world of business closer together," concluded Sari.
