As you may be aware, Malaysia is moving towards PIN-based acceptance of cards (PIN & PAY cards) from the Signature-based currently. This is to align towards global standards in ensuring better security for card-based transactions. The change will mean that all card transactions in Malaysia on locally issued cards will be verified by cardholders’ 6-digit personal identification number (PIN) instead of using cardholders’ signature.

PIN usage will be mandatory for all point-of-sale (POS) transactions in Malaysia effective on 1 July 2017 and signature will not be an acceptable mode of verification therefrom. In view thereof, all the existing signature-based credit, debit and prepaid cards will need to be replaced and all merchant terminals will be upgraded by December 2016. However overseas cards without Chip or PIN can continue to be used on newly upgraded terminals, without PIN usage but based on signature like today.

During the transitional period, the old signature card may still be used on the new upgraded terminals as well as new PIN & PAY cards can be used on the existing terminals.

We hope you have taken the necessary steps to replace your current signature-based cards to the new PIN-based cards as soon as possible to ensure smooth continued usage.
