Planning a holiday today feels very different compared to a decade ago. As travellers, we’re excited to explore new places again, yet uncertainties still linger. Whether it’s sudden work commitments, personal matters, unexpected travel jitters, or simply a change of mind, life happens. And that’s exactly why Cancellation for Any Reason (CFAR) coverage has become one of the most important add-ons in travel insurance.
Most standard travel insurance policies include trip cancellation benefits, but they only cover specific insured events, such as:
But what if your cancellation reason doesn’t fall into any of these? That’s where CFAR comes in.
CFAR is an optional benefit (available under selected plans) that allows travellers to cancel their trip for literally any reason, including reasons not traditionally covered under standard travel insurance.
Under the Tokio Marine Explorer Deluxe Plan, CFAR offers added flexibility on top of your standard travel insurance coverage.
Uneasy about your upcoming flights due to recent events in the Middle East?
This gives travellers unparalleled flexibility and financial protection.
2. Business Travellers
Business schedules can change overnight:
· Important meetings may be moved
· Projects may be delayed or accelerated
· New responsibilities may arise close to your travel date
CFAR provides flexibility when work priorities shift unexpectedly.
3. Families With Children
Parents know how quickly plans can be derailed:
· Kids fall sick days before departure
· School or exam schedules change
· Family matters arise at the last minute
While some scenarios may be covered under standard cancellation, others may not.
CFAR helps reduce financial stress when family needs come first.
4. Travellers Seeking Flexibility
CFAR is ideal if you:
· Prefer to keep your options open
· Are unsure if you’ll still want to travel when the time comes
· Feel more comfortable knowing you’re not “locked into” your trip
Here’s what travellers need to know before relying on CFAR:
✔ Coverage Limits
· Up to RM 5,000
· 75% reimbursement of expenses
· Covers flight + accommodation expenses.
✔ Requirements
· Proof of cancellations from the airline or hotel
· Cancellation must be made more than 48 hours before departure.
✔ Conditions to Note
· Expenses paid more than 14 days before policy purchase are not claimable.
· Expenses with refunds or vouchers received will not be eligible.
1. Buy Early, Not Last Minute
Purchase your travel insurance and CFAR add‑on as soon as you confirm your flights and accommodation.
Our guide on when to buy travel insurance explains the best timing to purchase your policy and why buying early matters.
2. Keep All Booking and Payment Records
Save your flight and hotel confirmations, payment receipts, and any change or cancellation emails.
These documents will be crucial when submitting a claim.
3. Check Your Trip’s Refund Policies
Review airline and hotel cancellation terms:
If most of your bookings are flexible or fully refundable, CFAR may be less necessary.
If your bookings are heavily non‑refundable, CFAR can offer strong value.
4. Review the Policy Wording
Always read the Product Disclosure Sheet (PDS) and policy wording for full details on:
· Coverage limits
· Eligibility criteria
Exclusions and conditions
CFAR isn’t just a premium add-on, it’s a smart investment for travellers who value freedom, flexibility, and peace of mind. When paired with comprehensive travel insurance like the Tokio Marine Explorer Deluxe Plan, CFAR ensures your travel experience starts stress-free.
